One of the most iconic destinations in Singapore: The Merlion Park!

If this is the first time you come to Singapore, one of the most iconic destinations that I suggest you visit is the Merlion Park, an emblematic symbol of Singapore. The Merlion is a mythical creature with the head of a lion and the body of a fish that is located at near the Marina Bay waterfront.

Maybe you will be quite surprised about Merlion’s appearance, so I will share the significance of Merlion’s design. The lion head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, which means “Lion City” in Malay. Its body is like a fish because of symbolizes Singapore’s origins as a fishing village. This statue stands as a vivid representation of Singapore’s rich history, blending its past and present.

Merlion stands at 8.6 meters tall and 70 tonnes in weight. It’s a striking sight, particularly with the backdrop of the Singapore skyline, which includes landmarks like Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer. You can spend all day to explore them. You can find more famous places in this post:

I’d encourage you to take photos at the viewing deck, which offers an excellent vantage point for capturing the Merlion with the cityscape. Additionally, it’s a fantastic spot to witness the water spout from the Merlion’s mouth, a feature that fascinates many tourists – the reason why this is always crowded special on the weekends or holidays.

After many times walking around here, I have detected some best times to visit Merlion Park for different experiences and share them with you now. If you want a peaceful view, come here early morning. Other times, in the evening when the city lights create a mesmerizing backdrop you will have a different feeling.

Few people know that there are other smaller Merlion statues located around the city such as the Merlion cub located near the original statue.

If you stand in Marina Bay Sands, you can walk through the Helix Bridge to come to Merlion, Helix Bridge formerly known as the Helix Twin Bridge, which is a pedestrian bridge connecting the Marina Center with Marina South in the Marina Bay area, Singapore. If in the evening, you continue to come through along the riverbank, not far away from Merlion you will catch performances from many other cultures, and enjoy them for free.
